What Is a Rental Casket?
A rental casket, often referred to as a ceremonial casket, is an outer shell that’s rented for use during a funeral or viewing, and is especially common when the body will be cremated afterward. The deceased is placed in a removable insert or container—often made of wood, cardboard, or lighter materials—which is entirely separate from the outer shell. This insert is one-time use only and remains with the body for cremation, ensuring the rented shell never directly contacts the body and can thus be sanitized and reused for other services.
How Do Rental Caskets Work?
- Appearance and Use: Visually indistinguishable from a traditional casket during the service, but structurally different. The shell is crafted with a panel (usually on the foot-end) that opens, allowing an insert to slide in or out.
- Hygiene and Reuse: The body only touches the insert, which is discarded at cremation; the outer shell is cleaned and reused.
- Purpose: Allows families the comfort of a traditional viewing or service while opting for cremation—combining ceremony with cost-effectiveness.
